P0751: Shift Solenoid A Performance/Stuck Off
Severity: Medium Avoid towing, steep loads, and prolonged driving until diagnosed. Stop and arrange recovery if the transmission slips, loses drive, overheats, or bangs into gear; driving through slip can cause further damage.
What does P0751 mean?
The commanded shift-solenoid A hydraulic response is not occurring as expected, or A behaves as if it remains off. A working electrical winding does not guarantee that the valve moves or fluid reaches the intended clutch.
Generic OBD-II definition: Shift Solenoid A Performance/Stuck Off. Confirm applicability in your vehicle service information.
Common causes
- Sticking solenoid A
- Contaminated fluid or restricted hydraulic passages
- Valve-body wear or solenoid wiring fault
Symptoms
- Harsh, missing, or incorrect shifts
- Limp mode
- Possible slipping or transmission overheating
Diagnostic focus
A performance/stuck-off fault is not the same as P0753 electrical. A solenoid can pass a resistance check but still stick mechanically, so match electrical and hydraulic evidence.
Can I keep driving with P0751?
Severity: Medium Avoid towing, steep loads, and prolonged driving until diagnosed. Stop and arrange recovery if the transmission slips, loses drive, overheats, or bangs into gear; driving through slip can cause further damage.
If the check engine light is flashing or the car runs badly, stop driving and have it checked.
Typical fixes
- Compare the command with the resulting gear and pressure
- Inspect fluid level/condition
- Test the solenoid circuit before investigating the valve body
