P0523: Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch High Input

Severity: High Treat a red oil-pressure warning, near-zero gauge reading, or engine knocking as an emergency: stop safely and switch off the engine. Do not keep restarting it. Have actual oil pressure checked before driving.

What does P0523 mean?

The oil-pressure sensor signal exceeds its allowed voltage range. A signal fault can make pressure look high, while real excessive pressure or incorrect oil can also require investigation.

Generic OBD-II definition: Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch High Input. Confirm applicability in your vehicle service information.

Common causes

  • Sender signal shorted to voltage or open return
  • Failed oil-pressure sensor
  • Wrong oil grade or an oil-flow restriction

Symptoms

  • Gauge reading unusually high
  • Oil-pressure or check engine warning
  • May otherwise drive normally

Diagnostic focus

High input is not reassurance that lubrication is healthy. Verify whether pressure is genuinely high or the gauge is being misled before deciding it is safe to keep driving.

Can I keep driving with P0523?

Severity: High Treat a red oil-pressure warning, near-zero gauge reading, or engine knocking as an emergency: stop safely and switch off the engine. Do not keep restarting it. Have actual oil pressure checked before driving.

If the check engine light is flashing or the car runs badly, stop driving and have it checked.

Typical fixes

  • Verify the required oil grade and condition
  • Inspect sender signal and return wiring
  • Compare a mechanical pressure measurement with reported pressure
