P0522: Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Low Input
Severity: High Treat a red oil-pressure warning, near-zero gauge reading, or engine knocking as an emergency: stop safely and switch off the engine. Do not keep restarting it. Have actual oil pressure checked before driving.
What does P0522 mean?
The oil-pressure sensor input voltage is too low. It may be caused by a circuit short or failed sender, but low real pressure remains a serious possibility until checked independently.
Generic OBD-II definition: Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Low Input. Confirm applicability in your vehicle service information.
Common causes
- Sender signal shorted to ground
- Failed oil-pressure sensor
- Wiring/connector fault
- Low oil level or a lubrication restriction
Symptoms
- Low or zero pressure indication
- Oil-pressure warning lamp
- Possible engine noise if pressure is truly low
Diagnostic focus
Low input describes the measured circuit, not a guaranteed failed sensor. A mechanical gauge is the way to distinguish false low feedback from a dangerous lubrication problem.
Can I keep driving with P0522?
Severity: High Treat a red oil-pressure warning, near-zero gauge reading, or engine knocking as an emergency: stop safely and switch off the engine. Do not keep restarting it. Have actual oil pressure checked before driving.
If the check engine light is flashing or the car runs badly, stop driving and have it checked.
Typical fixes
- Stop the engine if the oil warning is on
- Check level and inspect the sender harness
- Have a technician measure actual pressure and test the signal circuit
