P0521: Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Range/Performance

Severity: High Treat a red oil-pressure warning, near-zero gauge reading, or engine knocking as an emergency: stop safely and switch off the engine. Do not keep restarting it. Have actual oil pressure checked before driving.

What does P0521 mean?

Oil-pressure feedback is outside the expected behavior range. The sensor may be inaccurate, or genuine pressure may be wrong because of oil condition, oil level, or an internal lubrication problem.

Generic OBD-II definition: Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Range/Performance. Confirm applicability in your vehicle service information.

Common causes

  • Low or incorrect-viscosity oil
  • Actual low oil pressure
  • Faulty sender or sender connection

Symptoms

  • Pressure gauge reading low or high
  • Oil-pressure warning
  • Check engine light

Diagnostic focus

If the fault began after an oil change, verify the fill quantity, oil grade, filter, and leaks. Do not replace a sensor before ruling out a service-related lubrication issue.

Can I keep driving with P0521?

Severity: High Treat a red oil-pressure warning, near-zero gauge reading, or engine knocking as an emergency: stop safely and switch off the engine. Do not keep restarting it. Have actual oil pressure checked before driving.

If the check engine light is flashing or the car runs badly, stop driving and have it checked.

Typical fixes

  • Verify level, viscosity, and recent service details
  • Compare a mechanical pressure test with scan/gauge data
  • Test the sender circuit only after pressure is confirmed safe
