P0222: Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch B Circuit Low Input
Severity: High Unreliable throttle response can be dangerous. Do not continue driving with surging, stalling, or reduced acceleration that makes traffic unsafe; arrange recovery instead. Do not force an electronic throttle plate.
What does P0222 mean?
Position channel B is below its expected electrical range. A signal pulled toward ground may make the computer distrust throttle demand and restrict power even though the driver is moving the pedal.
Generic OBD-II definition: Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch B Circuit Low Input. Confirm applicability in your vehicle service information.
Common causes
- B signal shorted to ground
- Faulty sensor or poor installation
- Lost reference supply or connector damage
Symptoms
- Low or rough idle
- Little acceleration
- Stalling or surging
Diagnostic focus
Check whether several sensors have reference-supply codes. A shared reference fault can make a good throttle sensor read low; replacing the throttle body will not fix a shared wiring short.
Can I keep driving with P0222?
Severity: High Unreliable throttle response can be dangerous. Do not continue driving with surging, stalling, or reduced acceleration that makes traffic unsafe; arrange recovery instead. Do not force an electronic throttle plate.
If the check engine light is flashing or the car runs badly, stop driving and have it checked.
Typical fixes
- Verify sensor B supply and ground
- Inspect for a grounded signal wire
- Test channel B while watching the other position channel
