P0220: Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch B Circuit Malfunction
Severity: High Unreliable throttle response can be dangerous. Do not continue driving with surging, stalling, or reduced acceleration that makes traffic unsafe; arrange recovery instead. Do not force an electronic throttle plate.
What does P0220 mean?
The B position-sensing circuit has a fault. Many electronic throttle systems use redundant position inputs; B names a monitored channel, not bank 2 or a universal connector location.
Generic OBD-II definition: Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch B Circuit Malfunction. Confirm applicability in your vehicle service information.
Common causes
- Faulty B position sensor
- Corroded connector or chafed wiring
- Mechanical binding or sensor installation issue
Symptoms
- Poor idle quality
- Hesitation or stalling
- Reduced-power warning
Diagnostic focus
The two channels do not always increase in the same direction or at the same voltage. Use the specified relationship instead of expecting identical readings.
Can I keep driving with P0220?
Severity: High Unreliable throttle response can be dangerous. Do not continue driving with surging, stalling, or reduced acceleration that makes traffic unsafe; arrange recovery instead. Do not force an electronic throttle plate.
If the check engine light is flashing or the car runs badly, stop driving and have it checked.
Typical fixes
- Locate the B channel in the service information
- Check its supply, ground, and signal
- Compare A and B position traces using the manufacturer relationship
