P2111: Throttle Actuator Control System Stuck Open

Severity: High Unreliable throttle response can be dangerous. Do not continue driving with surging, stalling, or reduced acceleration that makes traffic unsafe; arrange recovery instead. Do not force an electronic throttle plate.

What does P2111 mean?

The electronic throttle is detected remaining open when it should return toward the commanded position. The problem may be actual mechanical sticking or misleading position feedback, either of which can compromise safe throttle control.

Generic OBD-II definition: Throttle Actuator Control System Stuck Open. Confirm applicability in your vehicle service information.

Common causes

  • Dirty or binding throttle plate
  • Failed throttle actuator
  • Faulty position feedback or damaged wiring

Symptoms

  • Surging or abnormal idle
  • Reduced or absent throttle response
  • Possible stalling or no start

Diagnostic focus

Keep fingers and tools out of the throttle while it can be energized. Do not force the plate or defeat reduced-power protection to continue a test drive.

Can I keep driving with P2111?

If the check engine light is flashing or the car runs badly, stop driving and have it checked.

Typical fixes

  • Avoid further driving if response is unreliable
  • Inspect the throttle assembly and connector using the approved safety procedure
  • Compare requested position, actual movement, and sensor feedback
