P0744: Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Intermittent
Severity: Medium Avoid towing, steep loads, and prolonged driving until diagnosed. Stop and arrange recovery if the transmission slips, loses drive, overheats, or bangs into gear; driving through slip can cause further damage.
What does P0744 mean?
The TCC circuit intermittently loses correct operation. The clutch may work during one drive and fail during another because of a loose connection, harness fault, or solenoid that changes behavior with heat.
Generic OBD-II definition: Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Intermittent. Confirm applicability in your vehicle service information.
Common causes
- Intermittent transmission harness connection
- Heat-sensitive TCC solenoid
- Intermittent open or short in the control path
Symptoms
- Intermittent check engine light
- Changing cruising RPM
- Reduced fuel economy or lockup irregularity
Diagnostic focus
A cold resistance test can miss a fault that appears only with hot fluid. Relate the event to temperature and movement rather than replacing a converter on an intermittent circuit code.

If the check engine light is flashing or the car runs badly, stop driving and have it checked.
Typical fixes

- Inspect connectors and harness movement
