P0742: Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Stuck On
Severity: High Avoid towing, steep loads, and prolonged driving until diagnosed. Stop and arrange recovery if the transmission slips, loses drive, overheats, or bangs into gear; driving through slip can cause further damage.
What does P0742 mean?
The torque-converter clutch appears to stay applied when it should release. A clutch that remains locked as the vehicle slows can drag the engine down and stall it at a stop.
Generic OBD-II definition: Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Stuck On. Confirm applicability in your vehicle service information.
Common causes
- Sticking TCC solenoid or hydraulic valve
- Wiring short keeping the circuit energized
- Internal converter/clutch problem
Symptoms
- Engine stalls when slowing to a stop
- Shudder or harsh engagement
- Check engine light
Diagnostic focus
A vehicle that restarts after stalling can still have the lockup clutch stuck on again at the next stop. Do not treat a successful restart as proof it is safe in traffic.
