P0444: Evaporative Emission System Purge Control Valve Circuit Open
Severity: Low With normal running and no fuel smell or leakage, arrange an emissions-system check. If you smell strong fuel vapor or see a leak, stop safely and have it inspected; keep ignition sources away.
What does P0444 mean?
The computer detects an open electrical path to the EVAP purge valve. This valve meters stored fuel vapor into the engine; an open circuit is not the same thing as a loose gas cap or a vapor leak.
Generic OBD-II definition: Evaporative Emission System Purge Control Valve Circuit Open. Confirm applicability in your vehicle service information.
Common causes
- Unplugged purge connector
- Broken feed or control wire
- Open purge-solenoid winding
Symptoms
- Steady check engine light
- Often no noticeable driving change
- EVAP readiness may not complete
Diagnostic focus
A smoke test finds vapor leaks but will not diagnose an electrically open solenoid. Complete the circuit tests before treating this as a tank-sealing problem.
Can I keep driving with P0444?
Severity: Low With normal running and no fuel smell or leakage, arrange an emissions-system check. If you smell strong fuel vapor or see a leak, stop safely and have it inspected; keep ignition sources away.
If the check engine light is flashing or the car runs badly, stop driving and have it checked.
Typical fixes
- Inspect the purge plug and harness
- Check the specified power feed
- Test valve-winding and circuit continuity with power removed
