P0153: O2 Sensor Circuit Slow Response (Bank 2 Sensor 1)
Severity: Medium With a steady light and normal running, arrange diagnosis soon. Stop for a flashing light, severe misfire, overheating, or a glowing catalyst; do not assume those symptoms are only a sensor fault.
What does P0153 mean?
The upstream bank 2 oxygen sensor is not reacting quickly enough to exhaust mixture changes. A sluggish front sensor can delay fuel corrections, unlike the naturally quieter signal expected from a downstream catalyst monitor.
Generic OBD-II definition: O2 Sensor Circuit Slow Response (Bank 2 Sensor 1). Confirm applicability in your vehicle service information.
Common causes
- Aged or contaminated upstream sensor
- Exhaust leak
- Wiring resistance or ineffective heater
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- Possible fuel-economy loss
- Sometimes no obvious driving symptom
Diagnostic focus
Use the correct test for an oxygen versus wideband air/fuel sensor. Generic narrowband switching voltage rules do not apply to every upstream sensor fitted to modern engines.
Can I keep driving with P0153?
Severity: Medium With a steady light and normal running, arrange diagnosis soon. Stop for a flashing light, severe misfire, overheating, or a glowing catalyst; do not assume those symptoms are only a sensor fault.
If the check engine light is flashing or the car runs badly, stop driving and have it checked.
Typical fixes
- Check the upstream heater and exhaust sealing
- Compare response with bank 1 under equivalent conditions
- Replace the sensor only after its slow response is confirmed
