P0058: HO2S Heater Control Circuit High (Bank 2 Sensor 2)
Severity: Low If the engine runs normally and the light is steady, arrange emissions-system diagnosis. Stop for a flashing light or severe roughness; those symptoms need separate urgent attention.
What does P0058 mean?
Bank 2 sensor 2 registers an excessive heater-control measurement. The affected component is the oxygen sensor after the bank 2 catalyst. The control strategy determines whether an open return, shorted wiring, or an internal heater fault creates that high reading; test the circuit before replacing parts.
Generic OBD-II definition: HO2S Heater Control Circuit High (Bank 2 Sensor 2). Confirm applicability in your vehicle service information.
Common causes
- Heater circuit shorted to power
- Open control/ground circuit on some designs
- Faulty bank 2 rear sensor heater
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- Usually little or no change in drivability
- Catalyst monitor may not complete
Diagnostic focus
If the code appeared after exhaust work, inspect rear sensor routing and connector damage. A cable pulled against a hot pipe can damage heater insulation without an exhaust leak.
Can I keep driving with P0058?
Severity: Low If the engine runs normally and the light is steady, arrange emissions-system diagnosis. Stop for a flashing light or severe roughness; those symptoms need separate urgent attention.
If the check engine light is flashing or the car runs badly, stop driving and have it checked.
Typical fixes
- Allow the exhaust to cool before inspecting wiring
- Inspect the bank 2 downstream wiring, then test the high-side or low-side control according to the manufacturer diagram.
- Repair wiring or replace the correct sensor only when the fault is confirmed
