P0009: Engine Positions System Performance (Bank 2)

Severity: High Arrange diagnosis promptly and avoid heavy loads. Stop the engine for timing-chain rattle, an oil-pressure warning, severe roughness, or a flashing check engine light; towing is safer than risking a timing failure.

What does P0009 mean?

Bank 2 camshaft timing no longer agrees with the engine position pattern expected by the computer. This bank is opposite the one containing cylinder 1. Chain stretch, tensioner trouble, and a displaced crank reference can all create a genuine timing mismatch.

Generic OBD-II definition: Engine Positions System Performance (Bank 2). Confirm applicability in your vehicle service information.

Common causes

  • Worn timing chain or failed tensioner
  • Shifted crankshaft timing reference
  • Incorrect timing-chain installation

Symptoms

  • Loss of power during acceleration
  • Rough running
  • Rattle from the timing cover

Diagnostic focus

A bank-2-only result helps localize the inspection, but it does not exclude a shared chain or oil-supply problem. Record whether the fault began after timing-cover or engine repairs.

Can I keep driving with P0009?

Severity: High Arrange diagnosis promptly and avoid heavy loads. Stop the engine for timing-chain rattle, an oil-pressure warning, severe roughness, or a flashing check engine light; towing is safer than risking a timing failure.

If the check engine light is flashing or the car runs badly, stop driving and have it checked.

Typical fixes

  • Identify bank 2 from the engine service diagram
  • Compare bank 2 timing data with bank 1
  • Inspect the chain, tensioner, and crank reluctor when waveform tests confirm misalignment
