P0008: Engine Positions System Performance (Bank 1)

Severity: High Arrange diagnosis promptly and avoid heavy loads. Stop the engine for timing-chain rattle, an oil-pressure warning, severe roughness, or a flashing check engine light; towing is safer than risking a timing failure.

What does P0008 mean?

The computer sees the bank 1 camshaft positions out of their expected relationship with the crankshaft. Bank 1 contains cylinder 1. This is a timing-system performance check, not a verdict that one position sensor has failed.

Generic OBD-II definition: Engine Positions System Performance (Bank 1). Confirm applicability in your vehicle service information.

Common causes

  • Stretched timing chain or a worn tensioner
  • Incorrect mechanical timing after engine work
  • A crankshaft reluctor wheel that has shifted

Symptoms

  • Timing-chain rattle
  • Hesitation and reduced power
  • Rough acceleration or poor fuel economy

Diagnostic focus

If P0009 is present too, investigate shared timing components and the crankshaft reference rather than buying two cam sensors. A sensor can report correctly while the chain is mechanically out of time.

Can I keep driving with P0008?

Severity: High Arrange diagnosis promptly and avoid heavy loads. Stop the engine for timing-chain rattle, an oil-pressure warning, severe roughness, or a flashing check engine light; towing is safer than risking a timing failure.

If the check engine light is flashing or the car runs badly, stop driving and have it checked.

Typical fixes

  • Check oil level and service history before further running
  • Review model-specific timing-chain service bulletins
  • Have cam/crank waveforms and mechanical timing checked together
