P0722: Output Speed Sensor Circuit No Signal
Severity: Medium Avoid towing, steep loads, and prolonged driving until diagnosed. Stop and arrange recovery if the transmission slips, loses drive, overheats, or bangs into gear; driving through slip can cause further damage.
What does P0722 mean?
The controller cannot detect an output-speed signal when it expects the output shaft to be rotating. Shifting and possibly the speedometer may be affected because road-speed feedback is missing.
Generic OBD-II definition: Output Speed Sensor Circuit No Signal. Confirm applicability in your vehicle service information.
Common causes
- Failed output-speed sensor
- Open or shorted output-sensor harness
- Connector or trigger-wheel damage
Symptoms
- Speedometer may stop working
- Harsh or missing shifts
- Limp mode
Diagnostic focus
An absent electrical signal should be verified independently of whether the vehicle has actually lost drive. If the transmission is not moving the output shaft, a zero speed value may describe a mechanical problem.
Can I keep driving with P0722?
Severity: Medium Avoid towing, steep loads, and prolonged driving until diagnosed. Stop and arrange recovery if the transmission slips, loses drive, overheats, or bangs into gear; driving through slip can cause further damage.
If the check engine light is flashing or the car runs badly, stop driving and have it checked.
Typical fixes
- Confirm the output should be rotating under the test conditions
- Inspect output-sensor wiring and trigger target
- Test the sensor signal and repair the verified failure
