P0717: Input/Turbine Speed Sensor A Circuit No Signal
Severity: Medium Avoid towing, steep loads, and prolonged driving until diagnosed. Stop and arrange recovery if the transmission slips, loses drive, overheats, or bangs into gear; driving through slip can cause further damage.
What does P0717 mean?
No usable input/turbine speed signal is detected when rotation should be present. The controller may default to a protective shift strategy because it cannot measure transmission input speed.
Generic OBD-II definition: Input/Turbine Speed Sensor A Circuit No Signal. Confirm applicability in your vehicle service information.
Common causes
- Failed input-speed sensor
- Open or shorted sensor wiring
- Loose or damaged transmission connector
Symptoms
- Very harsh or missing shifts
- Limp mode
- Check engine light
Diagnostic focus
Zero input speed at the wrong test condition can be normal on some layouts. Use the manufacturer operating conditions rather than assuming any zero value proves failure.
Can I keep driving with P0717?

Typical fixes
- Inspect the input-speed connector and supply where applicable
- Check signal while rotation is expected using the approved test
- Repair wiring or replace the sensor only after confirmation
