P0713: Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor A Circuit High Input
Severity: Medium Avoid towing, steep loads, and prolonged driving until diagnosed. Stop and arrange recovery if the transmission slips, loses drive, overheats, or bangs into gear; driving through slip can cause further damage.
What does P0713 mean?
Transmission fluid temperature sensor A signal voltage is too high. On a typical thermistor circuit an open path looks extremely cold, so high input does not automatically mean the fluid is overheated.
Generic OBD-II definition: Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor A Circuit High Input. Confirm applicability in your vehicle service information.
Common causes
- Open temperature sensor or signal path
- Poor terminal contact
- Signal shorted to a reference supply
Symptoms
- Harsh or delayed shifts
- Torque-converter clutch behavior changes
- Limp mode or transmission warning
Diagnostic focus
Distinguish high electrical input from high temperature. Do not replace the transmission cooler solely because a circuit-high code is stored.
Can I keep driving with P0713?
Severity: Medium Avoid towing, steep loads, and prolonged driving until diagnosed. Stop and arrange recovery if the transmission slips, loses drive, overheats, or bangs into gear; driving through slip can cause further damage.
If the check engine light is flashing or the car runs badly, stop driving and have it checked.
Typical fixes
- Check for a disconnected case plug or open sensor
- Compare cold-soak scan data with ambient
- Test circuit continuity and the sensor to the service chart
