P0410: Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction
Severity: Low If the light is steady and the engine runs normally, schedule diagnosis. Stop for smoke, a burning electrical smell, or severe rough running; those are not normal secondary-air symptoms.
What does P0410 mean?
The secondary-air system failed its operation check. It supplies fresh air to the exhaust during certain cold-start conditions to reduce emissions; this is not the same system as the engine air filter or cabin blower.
Generic OBD-II definition: Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction. Confirm applicability in your vehicle service information.
Common causes
- Failed or water-damaged air pump
- Blown pump fuse or faulty relay
- Leaking or stuck check valve or hose fault
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- Possible noisy air pump after startup
- Usually little change after warm-up
Diagnostic focus
Replacing a water-filled pump without fixing the source of water can lead to repeat failure. Check the exhaust check valve and applicable service bulletins.
Can I keep driving with P0410?
Severity: Low If the light is steady and the engine runs normally, schedule diagnosis. Stop for smoke, a burning electrical smell, or severe rough running; those are not normal secondary-air symptoms.
If the check engine light is flashing or the car runs badly, stop driving and have it checked.
Typical fixes
- Inspect the pump fuse and relay circuit
- Check for water intrusion and failed check valves
- Verify pump operation and airflow during the cold-start test
