P0409: Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor A Circuit
Severity: Medium Arrange diagnosis soon. If the engine stalls, surges severely, or pings under load, avoid continued driving until the cause is checked.
What does P0409 mean?
The EGR sensor A circuit is malfunctioning without the more specific low/high classification. Depending on the engine, feedback may measure valve position or EGR-related pressure, so the hardware must be identified first.
Generic OBD-II definition: Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor A Circuit. Confirm applicability in your vehicle service information.
Common causes
- Failed EGR feedback sensor
- Damaged wiring or poor connector
- Sticking EGR hardware or blocked feedback hoses on relevant designs
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- Possible rough idle or surging
- Sometimes no noticeable driving symptom
Diagnostic focus
Some engines use a differential-pressure feedback sensor rather than only an integral valve-position sensor. Do not assume every P0409 repair is replacement of the EGR valve.
Can I keep driving with P0409?
Severity: Medium Arrange diagnosis soon. If the engine stalls, surges severely, or pings under load, avoid continued driving until the cause is checked.
If the check engine light is flashing or the car runs badly, stop driving and have it checked.
Typical fixes
- Identify the feedback system used on the engine
- Inspect the sensor connector and any specified feedback hoses
- Test the sensor and verify EGR command versus response
