P0344: Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Intermittent (Bank 1 or Single Sensor)
Severity: High A position-signal fault can cause stalling or failure to restart. Avoid normal use until diagnosed; arrange towing if the engine stalls, runs severely rough, or will not start reliably.
What does P0344 mean?
The bank 1 camshaft A signal periodically disappears or becomes erratic. The computer may temporarily lose synchronization, then recover when the connection or sensor begins working again.
Generic OBD-II definition: Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Intermittent (Bank 1 or Single Sensor). Confirm applicability in your vehicle service information.
Common causes
- Intermittent supply, ground, or signal wire
- Loose sensor terminals
- Heat-sensitive cam sensor or damaged trigger wheel
Symptoms
- Intermittent bucking
- Stall followed by restart
- Check engine light
Diagnostic focus
A normal signal after the engine cools does not rule out a heat-related fault. Record whether the problem occurs hot, on bumps, or only on restart.
Can I keep driving with P0344?
Severity: High A position-signal fault can cause stalling or failure to restart. Avoid normal use until diagnosed; arrange towing if the engine stalls, runs severely rough, or will not start reliably.
If the check engine light is flashing or the car runs badly, stop driving and have it checked.
Typical fixes
- Save the fault temperature and RPM data
- Graph the cam signal during a careful harness inspection
- Compare the cam and crank patterns when the failure occurs
