P0052: HO2S Heater Control Circuit High (Bank 2 Sensor 1)
Severity: Medium If the engine runs normally and the light is steady, arrange emissions-system diagnosis. Stop for a flashing light or severe roughness; those symptoms need separate urgent attention.
What does P0052 mean?
The heater-control check for the bank 2 upstream sensor detects an excessive electrical measurement. The circuit heats the sensing element; it is separate from the mixture-signal circuit. A heater fault therefore does not establish whether the engine is running rich, lean, or at the correct mixture.
Generic OBD-II definition: HO2S Heater Control Circuit High (Bank 2 Sensor 1). Confirm applicability in your vehicle service information.
Common causes
- Heater control shorted to a supply
- Fault inside the upstream heater
- Damaged or incorrect sensor wiring
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- Slow entry into closed-loop fuel control
- Possible decrease in fuel economy
Diagnostic focus
Check the heater connector pinout before probing: the heater wires and mixture-signal wires serve different circuits. A high-control result should not lead to adjusting the fuel mixture.
Can I keep driving with P0052?
Severity: Medium If the engine runs normally and the light is steady, arrange emissions-system diagnosis. Stop for a flashing light or severe roughness; those symptoms need separate urgent attention.
If the check engine light is flashing or the car runs badly, stop driving and have it checked.
Typical fixes
- Allow the exhaust to cool before inspecting wiring
- Test bank 2 upstream heater current or resistance as specified and inspect for crossed or damaged wiring.
- Repair wiring or replace the correct sensor only when the fault is confirmed
