P0032: HO2S Heater Control Circuit High (Bank 1 Sensor 1)
Severity: Medium If the engine runs normally and the light is steady, arrange emissions-system diagnosis. Stop for a flashing light or severe roughness; those symptoms need separate urgent attention.
What does P0032 mean?
The bank 1 sensor 1 heater-control circuit records an above-limit electrical measurement. This sensor is before the catalyst and may be an oxygen or wideband air/fuel sensor. High heater-control input does not indicate rich exhaust or prove the oxygen-sensing element has failed.
Generic OBD-II definition: HO2S Heater Control Circuit High (Bank 1 Sensor 1). Confirm applicability in your vehicle service information.
Common causes
- Heater circuit shorted to voltage
- Internally damaged sensor heater
- Frayed wiring or poor connector contact
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- Slow entry into closed-loop fuel control
- Possible decrease in fuel economy
Diagnostic focus
A high heater-control measurement is not evidence of a rich mixture. Inspect where the upstream sensor cable runs near hot exhaust and identify the control strategy before interpreting voltage.
Can I keep driving with P0032?
Severity: Medium If the engine runs normally and the light is steady, arrange emissions-system diagnosis. Stop for a flashing light or severe roughness; those symptoms need separate urgent attention.
If the check engine light is flashing or the car runs badly, stop driving and have it checked.
Typical fixes
- Allow the exhaust to cool before inspecting wiring
- Test the heater and control circuit for a short using the wiring diagram; do not jumper the controller output.
- Repair wiring or replace the correct sensor only when the fault is confirmed
