P0023: "B" Camshaft Position Actuator Circuit (Bank 2)

Severity: Medium Arrange diagnosis promptly and avoid heavy loads. Stop the engine for timing-chain rattle, an oil-pressure warning, severe roughness, or a flashing check engine light; towing is safer than risking a timing failure.

What does P0023 mean?

The exhaust-cam oil-control actuator circuit on bank 2 is malfunctioning. The controller uses this solenoid to change camshaft timing hydraulically. B normally identifies the exhaust cam, and bank 2 is the bank without cylinder 1. A circuit complaint does not by itself prove the timing chain has moved.

Generic OBD-II definition: "B" Camshaft Position Actuator Circuit (Bank 2). Confirm applicability in your vehicle service information.

Common causes

  • Open or shorted wiring at the bank 2 VVT solenoid
  • Failed oil-control solenoid winding
  • Corroded or loose actuator connector

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Rough idle
  • Reduced engine performance

Diagnostic focus

The exhaust actuator circuit on bank 2 is the target, not the cam position sensor. A bidirectional scan-tool command can help establish whether the actuator has power and receives a control signal.

Can I keep driving with P0023?

Severity: Medium Arrange diagnosis promptly and avoid heavy loads. Stop the engine for timing-chain rattle, an oil-pressure warning, severe roughness, or a flashing check engine light; towing is safer than risking a timing failure.

If the check engine light is flashing or the car runs badly, stop driving and have it checked.

Typical fixes

  • Confirm the B actuator location for this engine
  • Inspect its plug and harness for oil contamination or damage
  • Test supply, control circuit, and solenoid resistance against factory specifications
